Ernald Christiansen or "Chris" as most people knew him, died one month prior to his 85th birthday of a heart attack on Friday, July 18, 1997.
Chris was born August 17, 1912 the first of eight children of Erastus Julius Christiansen and Johanna Katherine Christiansen in Emery, Utah. A graduate of South Emery High School, he left home to work in the coal mines of Utah and Colorado for several years. He served in the US Army during World War II in the 766 Railroad Operating Battalion, Headquarters Company: serving in Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, England and Italy. He received three Battle Stars. Following the war, he further learned the carpenter trade by journeying under his father Erastus. He joined the Carpenters Local #184 and was a very skilled and talented member for over 55 years. He was very proud of the many churches, schools and other buildings he worked on. Including the remodeling of the Promised Valley Playhouse and Capitol Theatre, building Cottonwood High School and taking his first helicopter ride to build the lodges at Snowbird Ski Resort. He was particularly proud of the time he spent building the Rose Park Stake Center and Gym and his own house.Upon retirement in 1976, he began 21 years of making children's furniture and toys which he sold each year at the Valley Fair Mall Seniors Boutique. Many homes in his neighborhood have something he built or remodeled in them. Chris was always using his talents to help others, especially the widows in the area. He was a friend to all. He was a wonderful gardener who would share his harvest with family and friends. He served several years as a member of the Seniors Legislature and was a 10 year member of the Rose Park Lions Club. Member of the LDS Church. He married Joyce L. Soelberg, September 7, 1947 and was looking forward to celebrating his 50th Wedding Anniversary next month. He said, "Anyone who can stay married 50 years deserves a party".
He is survived by his wife Joyce; his children: Lynda and John DeRushia, West Valley City; Randy and Kathy Christiansen, South Ogden; Jill Dastrup, Salt Lake City. He loved his eight grandchildren: Christie, Lori, Gene, Tammy, Adam, Kimberlee, Danny and Kristina; his nine great-grandchildren; and his sisters, Ruby Minchey Sherman, Cleo Willard, Lorraine Mayne and Kathleen Phillips.
Preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Lester, Christian, Lavour, Torval and Elvin, and two daughters: Carol Ann and Melodie.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the Rose Park Stake Center (West Chapel), 760 North 1200 West. A viewing will be held Monday evening from 6 - 8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, and from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. at the church. Interment at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 10600 South 1700 East.
